Rule 2. Officials Duties

  1. Score Keeping: Keeping order of the score of the game they are officiating. referees are also required to circle or highlight points where there was an appeal or questionable call for future reviews and breakdowns so we can correct rules accordingly.

  2. Nonbiased: Being a referee of handball it may be hard to put your emotions aside for difficult calls with our community being so close but this is crucial and must be done.

  3. Verbally Engaging a Player: Players have a tendency to be hot headed and aggressive toward the referees during big moments of the game it is essential that the referee does not engage in back and forth with the player. If the player is unhappy with a call, they have a right to appeal, the referee is not to reply to a player unless they appeal. Once an appeal is called it must be documented and followed through completely to cater to the player, then the official call is made regardless of the outcome the score is the next thing called.

  4. Referee Acquiring: In Handball United events the Players will be notified ahead of time who the referee of their games will be and at that time they can confirm or deny until they are satisfied. In the event during a game where a player feels they want a referee change one will be given to them to avoid feeling of any foul play.

  5. Illegal Movements: Main referees can and should call illegal movements to end the volley and act according to the rules on illegal movements. The main referee is the only referee who can stop a play.

  6. Appeal Process: When a player asks for an appeal it means they are not satisfied with the main referees call and would like the main referee to ask all of the linesmen what they thought of that play since certain actions can be blocked from the main referee by the players. upon asking all of the linesmen it is ultimately the main referee’s final decision, but he must take into account who had the best view and what they saw.

Rule 2.1: Main Referee

  1. Out Linesmen: The Out Linesmen primary duty is to signal when the ball lands out of bounds to the players so the rally ends. A secondary duty is to look out for any illegal movements and call any foot shorts they see.

  2. Short Linesmen: The Short Linesmen Primary duty is to call any foot shorts on the short line and look out for but not call any backswings or illegal movements just in case asked by the main referee.

  3. Long Linesmen: The Long Linemen Primary duty is to signal a long ball immediately as it bounces and look out for illegal movements just in case asked by a main referee.

Rule 2.2: Linesmen

If you do not agree with the rules above or have a different opinion on a particular part of the rule please fill out the appeal form.

*Call: A final announcement by a referee or linesmen to signify a point, down or illegal movement.

*Foot Short: a foot short is when a players foot is touching either the short or outside lines while he or his partner is serving, and should be called immediately to end the rally. A foot short results in a loss of 1 serve, now that player only has one chance of serving in the service zone instead of two until a full rally is played out.
